I have worked with Jang Kayani for numerous years whilst he was responsible for the delivery of Prevent and more recently Channel for the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. Jang is incredibly knowledgeable in CTU risks, risk and vulnerability management, and the Channel and Prevent processes.
He is skilled in negotiating and supporting partnership arrangements and ensuring partners and professionals realise their responsibilities and are equipped to undertake them. He has been invaluable to me as the Channel chair in Walsall, ensuring that I understand my role and the requirements but also have a wider knowledge base in CTU concerns and processes to empower me to undertake my role effectively.
Jang took the time to help me and the Channel panel in Walsall to understand best practice and work with our local systems and partnerships to amend and improve working practices, including revising the terms of reference for the group, increasing participation and ownership and streamlining meeting agenda’s to be more focused. Jang took the time to ensure those less knowledgeable in risk and vulnerability management and wider counter terrorism awareness were up skilled and confident to ask questions and provide meaningful contributions to the panel process.
There has been no challenge too difficult for Jang to overcome, he has approached difficulties with enthusiasm and commitment to change with a core knowledge and skill set around understanding the complexities of the individuals and systems we hope to impact upon.
Jang is an authentic leader with a visible passion for engaging in work to reduce the risks presented through vulnerability to violent extremism. This is demonstrated in everything I have seen him do, his presentation skills are excellent, he is clear and concise but also helpful, informative and responsive.
I have no hesitation in recommending him to any agency or partnership who need to understand Prevent, Channel and the impact of the Prevent Duty.
Chair of Walsall's Channel Panel and Strategic Lead for Targeted Youth Support and Youth Justice Services
I have known and worked with Jangeer for many years now both as a Prevent Inspector and Regional Channel lead for West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit. I have found him to be very knowledgeable in both areas always giving informed and considered advice on matters relating to radicalisation and extremism. In the time I have known Jangeer, he has produced numerous presentations and workshops for the Regional Channel Chairs and Prevent leads and recently completed a significant review of local Channel processes assisting local Channel Chairs and Panels implement much needed changes across the greater West Midlands. This has helped develop a greater consistency of local processes for Channel across the region.
Jangeer works well within the partnership arena providing support to all agencies, explaining legislation, risks and vulnerabilities to those concerned and has a considerable amount of experience and expertise. I have no hesitation in recommending Jangeer to organisations who need help or support in relation to understanding or implementing Channel and Prevent.
Birmingham Prevent Lead
I have worked with Jangeer for many years. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience around the security threat faced by this country, the various government strategies designed to tackle that threat and the very real dangers posed to young and vulnerable people from radicalisation. As a local Prevent coordinator I have regularly called on his expertise around what are at times extremely sensitive issues. His responses have always been considered measured and practical. In addition to this advice, Jangeer took on the responsibility for the training and development of Channel Panels within the boarder West Midlands and his efforts have significantly improved these vital supportive mechanisms. Jangeer has excellent communication and presentational skills and brings a somewhat unique ability to both understand and meet the needs and legislative requirements of organisations faced with such challenges, whilst possessing a detailed and local knowledge of the effects and impacts of these challenges on local communities.
I have worked within Safeguarding for over 10 years in total and I was recommended to look at the range of services and expertise Star Consultancy and Training could offer us by a colleague. Shortly after initial telephone conversations with Jangeer we held a meeting to discuss what support Star Consultancy and Training could offer us and the level of service we needed. I felt immediately at ease and confident that Jangeer and Charlie had a wealth of knowledge, expertise and network of support to work together with the college to address some of the training issues identified. Both Jangeer and Charlie were able to take a holistic approach and identify the areas of development we needed and showed me examples of comprehensive, bespoke training packages and risk assessments that could be provided, meeting the needs of our organisation effectively and ensuring that we are, as on organisation robust within Safeguarding. Jangeer and Charlie delivered a full day training to all staff from all departments ensuring that the training was adapted to the level of need required, Jangeer and Charlie ensured all areas of training were included around legislation, when and how to report concerns including interactive workshops. The feedback received from staff was excellent. One member of staff stating that it was the best training they had received for over 17 years with the organisation. I would, without hesitation work with Star Consultancy and Training again and will continue to work together for an on-going package of support.
I have worked with Jangeer Kayani for over 6 years in my role as Chair of a Channel Panel in two localities. Throughout this time I have been tremendously impressed with the expertise, clarity and support from Jangeer that has really enhanced my approach personally and that of the Panels I have been involved with. Through working with Jangeer, we reviewed the way in which the Panel operated, helping us to be clearer about our shared understanding around vulnerabilities, making meetings more concise and bringing a sharper focus to our decision making around accountabilities and outcomes. He exudes a tangible appreciation not only of the subject matter, but also how to manage partnership networks to deliver results.
The advice is unwaveringly professional and constructive, drawn from a deep understanding of radicalisation, with a drive to help partnerships fully identify risks, the range of possible responses together with a clear focus on getting the right things done. Jangeer is adept at challenging colleagues in a professional but supportive manner, helping partners to keep the needs of the individual at the forefront of the Panel’s work.
In addition to improving the work of our Panel through his expertise and encouragement, I have seen Jangeer lead numerous partnership learning and development events around Prevent. He has led the West Midlands Channel Panel network to support peer improvement activities, including addressing national requirements as well as reviewing, learning and sharing best practice within the Region. Jangeer has also led a very well received combined authority training event involving Coventry and Solihull Panels in a workshop on the role and operation of Channel Panels. He brought together the whole event, including delivering the keynote presentation and developed unique case study material to engage colleagues drawn from a wide range of agencies. Jangeer is a highly confident presenter and facilitator of group discussions around Prevent and Channel, able to draw out important issues around statutory and agency requirements, the roles and responsibilities of individuals and creative responses to situations.
In short, Jangeer is a genuine expert both in Prevent and Channel as well as how to make Channel Panels more efficient and effective. I have found Jangeer to be a highly committed practitioner and would welcome the opportunity to work with him again in the future.
